This series made its debut in 1992, and has five seasons and over 120 episodes under its belt. Situated in the 24th century, at the same time as TNG, it involves the adventures in a spce station loacted near a wormhole connecting the unexplored gamma quadrant :

The main characters :

Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). Widowed father whose wife died during a Borg attack. Federation representative who is considered a religious figure by the inhabitants of nearby planet Bajor.

First Officer Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor). Bajoran national, ex-freedom fighter in the bajoran resistance against cardassian occupation, must balance her duty to her government with her religious awe at Sisko.

Security Officer Odo (Rene Auberjonois). In charge of law keeping and station security. Belongs to the Founders race from the gamma quadrant, capable of adopting any form or shape.

Science Officer Jadzia Daz (Terry Farrell). Of Trill origin, she consists of a humanoid host (Jadzia) and a simbiont (Dax), in such a way that her personality is an amalgam of both. Jadzia is 23-24 years old, Dax is more than 800 years old.

Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig). Recent graduate of the academmy, where he was a top student. Comes to DS9 in search of adventure and new horizons, practicing medicine in the limits of the known frontier.

Tactical Officer Worf (Michael Dorn). Originally security officer in TNG, he is now servicing aboard DS9, considers the USS Defiant as his home.

Chief Miles O' Brien (Colm Meaney). Former transporter chief on the USS Enterprise-D, he is now responsible for maintenance and upgrade of all the station systems.

Quark (Armin Shimerman). Ferengi owner of "Quark's", a bar/gambling establishment on the station. Always involved in not quite legal business, has a curious feud with Odo.
